Hair concealers are cosmetic products designed to hide thinning areas by making the hair and scalp look fuller. They aren’t a treatment for hair loss, but they provide an instant, visual fix.

Most concealers work by clinging to the hair you already have. Tiny fibres or pigments are charged so they adhere to individual hairs via static electricity. When you sprinkle or spray them onto thinning spots, they stick to the strands and fill in gaps, giving the appearance of thicker hair. Other formulations (often liquids or powders) coat each hair shaft with colour, adding a bit of bulk and reducing the contrast between hair and scalp.

Because the fibres and pigments need something to attach to, these products work best when there is still some hair in the thinning area; they don’t hide completely bald spots. They also come in a range of colours, so you can match the product to your natural hair colour—black in your case—to keep the result natural-looking. The effect is temporary: once you shampoo your hair, the fibres or pigments wash out and need to be reapplied.
